Recycled, rough, ultra-smooth, coated, and heavily inked surfaces remain secure even in dirty or dusty environments. Gummed paper tape, sometimes called water-activated paper tape, is a particular type of carton sealing tape. When activated by water, the starch-based adhesive penetrates the corrugated box and forms a permanent bond between the package and tape. Removing the gummed paper tape will also tear open the box — a great security feature for people who want proof of tampering.

Most gummed paper tapes are reinforced with one or more fiberglass lattices layered between the paper. Each additional fiberglass lattice will make the tape more challenging to tear. Gummed paper tape with multiple layers of fiberglass reinforcement can support more weight and provide extra security. Additionally, the tamper-evident seal will better protect moisture-sensitive products and shipments than other carton sealing tapes. 

One strip of gummed paper tape is all you need to create a sturdy seal against extreme temperatures, direct light and high humidity.

While gummed paper tape can increase tear-resistance by layering fiberglass lattices between the paper, filament tapes use fiberglass filaments embedded into the adhesive. Additional glass fibers enhance the tape's integrity and prevent elongation, so your boxes can withstand the intense pressures experienced during transit. The two types of filament tape are:

• One-way: Single-woven filament tape with fiberglass reinforcement in a single direction

• Two-way: Cross-weaved filament tape with fiberglass reinforcement in both directions

Both types have high tensile strength, ideal for light to medium shipments. One-way filament tape can save you money if there's a minimal concern of the tape splitting lengthwise. Because this type only creates a tear-resistant seal in one direction, the adhesive can't provide complete protection. For jobs that require stronger tear-resistance, two-way filament tape can give you peace of mind. 

Though impossible to tear by hand, you can use a filament tape dispenser for quick and efficient application of either type of tape. With good performance in heavy-duty sealing, strapping and bundling applications, filament tape is an economical alternative for industrial packaging.

Masking tape consists of easy-to-remove adhesive on a thin paper backing. Commonly used to protect surfaces from paint, masking tape can also be a helpful tool to stock for your shipping team. Its flimsier adhesion can secure bubble wrap or packing paper around various contents without causing unnecessary holdups or damages during the unpacking process. However, you shouldn't use masking tape for sealing your boxes. It's less durable than other packaging tapes and can't guarantee safe shipment.
